Our verdict
JDate, now operated by Black Cap, is one of the best-known dating sites for Jewish singles. Basic members can message their matches, and everyone can set preferences for denomination and synagogue.
Bottom line: A strong choice if a Jewish partner is important to you; combine it with Hinge for more options.
Great for: Jewish singles
Not ideal for: People outside the US, Canada and Australia, or anyone who wants to pause their profile.
What’s changed at JDate
JDate has been helping Jewish singles meet since 1997, and it’s changed a lot lately. Its help center says it’s operated by Black Cap Holdings, the group that also runs Christian Mingle and Zoosk (JDate). A new iPhone app arrived in June 2025, still listed under Spark Networks in the App Store. So many older JDate reviews describe a different service.
It’s also available only in the United States, Canada, Australia and US territories. If you sign in from elsewhere, or through a VPN, your account can be blocked (JDate). If you’re traveling to Israel or the UK, plan on being unable to log in.
How the JDate dating site works
You can use it on the website or in the app, and you must be 18 or over. After you build your profile, JDate recommends members who fit your answers and preferences, rather than letting you search for anyone by name. You get a few ways to meet people:
- Recommended Picks. Up to three a day on the free plan, or ten with Premium.
- Discover. One profile at a time from outside your preferences, to Like or Discard.
- Explore. Several members at once, nearest first, with any interests you share.
When two people like each other, it’s a match, and you can chat. To reach someone before that, send an Intro Message, a note of up to 400 characters that goes with a Like.
Jewish preferences on JDate
This is what sets it apart. Every member can set preferences for Jewish denominational affiliation, such as Reform, Conservative or Orthodox, and for synagogue membership or attendance, as well as age, distance, education, politics, relationship type and children. Premium adds kosher, height, family plans, smoking and drinking (JDate). Preferences guide your matches rather than filter them strictly, so you may still see people outside them.
JDate has also started showing members from its sister apps. It says everyone you see has identified as part of your community, but you can’t turn this off yet.
What’s free on JDate
More than you may have heard. A free Basic account lets you view profiles, send 10 Likes a day and message anyone you’ve matched with. You also get three Intro Messages every seven days, though photos on any you receive stay blurred. Premium adds unlimited Likes, See Who Liked You and read receipts. See what JDate costs.
Is JDate legit?
Yes, it’s a real service with a long history. Photos are reviewed before they go live, and a selfie check earns you a blue badge. Spark Networks notes that it doesn’t run background checks on members, though. The new app’s ratings are weak: 3.3 out of 5 from only 473 ratings in the US App Store, and 2.2 from about 1,150 reviews on Google Play (checked November 1, 2026). Our Jewish dating sites ranking compares it with mainstream options.
JDate also offers a paid matchmaking service, where matchmakers introduce you to people personally. It’s sold separately, so ask for the price first.
JDate vs Hinge
Hinge has far more people, is free to message, and lets you set religion as a preference, but it has no detail on denomination. See JDate vs Hinge.
Our tip
Use your 10 daily Likes on people you’d really meet, and spend your three Intro Messages carefully. Set affiliation and synagogue preferences, since they’re free. Say on your profile how you observe, and what kind of home you’d like, because that’s what JDate’s members want to know.
