Where people over 50 date online
Dating over 50 online is common: in Pew Research Center’s 2022 survey, 23% of Americans in their 50s said they had used a dating site or app. Among online daters over 50, half had used Match, compared with 11% who had used Tinder (Pew Research Center, 2023).
That points to two good routes. Dating websites for people over 50, such as SilverSingles and OurTime, put you among people your age. Bigger dating websites for singles over 50, such as Match and eHarmony, give you a larger pool with plenty of members in their 50s. People in their early 50s in big cities can also do well on mainstream apps: in the same survey, 19% of online daters in their 50s had used Tinder, compared with 6% in their 60s.
Mature dating for women over 50
Women over 50 are more likely than men to have had a hard time online: Pew found that 57% of women 50 and older described their online dating experiences as negative, compared with 38% of men. For mature women dating online, a few choices make a real difference:
- Pick a site with a serious crowd. Paid, relationship-focused sites such as eHarmony and SilverSingles tend to attract people who want something real.
- Use filters and blocking freely. Set the age range and distance that suit you, and block anyone rude or pushy without explanation.
- Be open about age. Some women over 50 find they click with men a few years younger. Our guide to older woman, younger man relationships covers what to expect.
Dating over 50 as a man
Men over 50 often send lots of messages and get few replies. Read each profile and mention something specific in your first message; our first message examples help. Use a recent, well-lit photo where you’re smiling, and consider including women close to your own age in your search. Being clear about what you want, from companionship to remarriage, saves everyone time.
Are there free dating sites over 50?
Most dating sites for over 50 are free to join and browse but charge to message. Stitch has a limited free membership with events and groups, and in Australia RSVP lets you join free and pay only per conversation. If you want to message without paying at all, mainstream apps such as Hinge, Bumble and Tinder are free to use, although their members skew younger. Our ranking of free dating sites compares them.
Dating after divorce or loss
Many people start dating over 50 after a divorce or the death of a partner. There’s no right time; start when you feel ready, and say what you’re looking for now rather than explaining the past. Our rankings for divorced singles and widows and widowers point to sites where many members are in the same place.
Tips before you start
Write a warm, specific profile: what a good weekend looks like, your family situation and what you hope to find. Use recent photos, including at least one full-length and one doing something you love. Our online dating after 50 guide walks through each step.
Take it slowly: chat on the site, video call, then meet somewhere public. Scammers target older daters, so never send money or gift cards to anyone you meet online, and read our romance scam guide.
