Is there a completely free dating site?
Almost none. If you’re looking for totally free dating sites, Facebook Dating is the only service in this ranking with no paid plans at all: every feature is free, as long as you have a Facebook account. Every other free dating site works on a “freemium” model. Matching and messaging are free, and you pay only for extras such as unlimited likes, advanced filters or seeing who likes you.
What doesn’t exist is a legitimate site that works without registration. Every real dating service asks you to create an account, because profiles and messages have to belong to someone. Sites that promise free online dating without registration and payment are usually scams or fronts for paid chat services, so steer clear.
What “free” really means on each dating app
What dating apps are free, then? All of the ones below let you message your matches without paying. The difference is what the free plan limits.
| App or site | Free messaging | Main limit on the free plan |
| Hinge | Yes, with matches | Limited likes per day |
| Tinder | Yes, with matches | Ads and a cap on likes |
| Bumble | Yes, with matches | Matches expire if nobody starts the chat |
| OkCupid | Yes, with matches | Daily like limit; Dealbreakers are paid |
| Plenty of Fish | Yes | Ads; extra visibility is paid |
| Facebook Dating | Yes | None; there are no paid plans |
So are the big dating apps free? For messaging, yes. You can use most dating websites for free too, but sites such as eHarmony and SilverSingles only let you join and browse for free and charge before you can message. They can be worth it if you want something serious, but they aren’t free dating sites. Each brand’s pricing page, such as Tinder pricing or Hinge pricing, shows what the upgrades cost.
Free dating sites with free chat
If free chat is what matters most, pick one of the free messaging dating sites where you can message as soon as you match. Tinder, Hinge, OkCupid and Badoo all work this way, and Plenty of Fish lets you message people you find through search. On Bumble, women send the first message in man–woman matches, and on happn, chat opens once you both like each other. Prefer to date on a computer? Tinder, Bumble, OkCupid, Plenty of Fish and Badoo also work as free dating websites in your browser.
When paying for a dating app makes sense
For many people, the free version is enough to meet someone. Consider upgrading only if you’re getting matches but keep hitting the daily like limit, or if you have strict must-haves and want advanced filters. Try the free version for a few weeks first, and turn off auto-renewal if you only want one month.
Tips before you start
On free sites, your profile does the heavy lifting. Fill in every prompt, add four to six clear, recent photos and complete photo verification where the app offers it, so matches can see you’re real.
If your app limits likes, spend them on profiles you’d actually message rather than swiping on everyone. Free sign-up also makes free sites easier for fake accounts to join, so keep chats in the app and video call before meeting. Our catfish guide shows what to look for.
