How Facebook Dating works

This Facebook Dating review starts with what it is: not a separate app, but a section of the Facebook app where you build a dating profile apart from your main one. Meta tested it in Colombia in 2018 and launched it in the US in September 2019 (Meta). You must be 18 or over, and it works only in the Facebook apps for iPhone and Android, not on a computer (Facebook). To find it, open the menu and tap Dating, or type “Facebook Dating” into the app’s search bar.

Your Dating profile has its own photos, prompts and preferences, such as age range, distance and height. You like or pass on the people Facebook suggests, and when you both like each other, a chat opens inside Dating. Meta says your Dating profile and conversations aren’t shared outside Dating, and by default it doesn’t suggest your Facebook friends. You can choose to see friends of friends.

Facebook Dating features

• Secret Crush. Like a Facebook friend or a friend of a friend anonymously. It turns into a match only if they pick you too.
• Dating assistant. Added in September 2025 and rolling out gradually in the US and Canada, it’s a chat in the Matches tab. You describe who you’re looking for in your own words, and it suggests matches, profile tweaks and date ideas (Meta).
• Meet Cute. Once a week, Facebook sets you up with a surprise match. You can chat or unmatch, and you can turn the feature off at any time.
• Vibe Check. In 2026 Facebook Dating added weekly questions that feed into matching, starting in the US.
• Facebook Verified. Since July 2026, Meta has been rolling out a free badge for people who confirm a video selfie against their profile photos. It shows on dating profiles too (Meta).

Who you’ll meet

In November 2025 Meta said Facebook Dating had 21.5 million daily users across 52 countries, including 1.77 million US users aged 18 to 29 (TechCrunch). Meta is pushing hard for younger users, but anyone over 18 can join, and people over 50 use it too. You choose which genders you want to meet, so it works for gay, lesbian and bisexual daters as well. How busy it is depends on where you live, so look at how many new profiles appear in your first week.

Is Facebook Dating safe and private?

Your friends don’t see your Dating profile, and nothing you do in Dating is posted to your timeline. It isn’t fully walled off, though. Meta’s Dating privacy policy says Dating information can be used to personalize your experience on the rest of Facebook. Meta also says it doesn’t verify what members write about themselves and doesn’t run background checks. Fake profiles and bots turn up, as everywhere. Is Facebook Dating still a thing?

Yes. It’s still running in 2026, and Meta keeps adding features. If Dating has disappeared from your menu, the usual causes are an outdated app, an account that doesn’t meet the age rules, or living in a country where it isn’t offered.
