Our verdict
Match is one of the original dating sites and still one of the best for grown-up, relationship-focused dating, with detailed profiles and strong search.
Bottom line: Choose Match if you want control over who you contact and a mature crowd looking for real relationships.
Great for: Serious daters who like to search
Not ideal for: People who want a fast swipe app, or anyone who dislikes long plans billed up front.
How the Match dating site works
Many Match.com reviews still describe a site you have to pay to use, and that’s out of date. Match has been running for more than 25 years and belongs to Match Group, which also owns Tinder and Hinge. You can use it on the website or in the iPhone and Android apps. To join, you must be 18 or over and single or separated, and you can’t have a conviction for a felony, a sex crime or a violent crime (Match).
You build a detailed profile, then look for people in a few ways. The Recommended stack and Top Picks suggest people based on your preferences and activity. Search lets you filter for yourself. Mutual Search and Reverse Search show people looking for someone like you. In some markets, Free Text Search uses AI to read a description of who you want, and Match also lists local events in its app.
What free members can do
This has changed a lot. Match now says all free members can chat with every match (Match). If you like someone and they like you back, you can message each other without paying. Free members can also rate up to 50 profiles a day in Recommended, and get up to three Highlights a day.
What you can’t do for free is see who liked you, send unlimited likes or use the advanced filters. Unlimited Search, and sending an intro to someone you haven’t matched with, come with Platinum. In New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Texas and Oklahoma, free members also get one intro a day.
Who you’ll meet on Match
Match skews older than the swipe apps. In Pew Research’s 2022 survey of US adults, online daters aged 50 and over were about five times more likely to have used Match than Tinder, at 50% against 11% (Pew Research Center). That makes it one of the first sites to try in your forties, fifties and sixties. See our over-50 dating sites ranking. Most members want a relationship, and search across long distances helps in rural areas.
Is Match legit and worth it?
Yes, Match is a real, long-running service. It says it never sends fake likes or messages. If a message comes from a “Profile Unavailable” member, that person has left or been removed. Photo Verification checks a video selfie against your photos and gives you a badge. Fakes still exist, so report anyone who asks for money.
The ratings are lower than the big apps: 3.9 out of 5 from about 244,000 ratings in the US App Store and 3.3 from about 154,000 reviews on Google Play (checked November 1, 2026). Read the billing section on our Match cost page before you buy, because the full price is charged up front.
Is it worth paying? If you’re matching with people near you on the free plan and want to see who liked you, a tier makes sense. If nobody near you is active, a subscription won’t change that.
Match vs eHarmony and OurTime
eHarmony does more of the choosing for you with its compatibility quiz, while Match lets you search; see eHarmony vs Match. OurTime is built for singles over 50; see Match vs OurTime.
Our tip
Spend a week on the free plan and use your 50 daily ratings on people you’d really meet. Every mutual like opens a free chat. If that brings you conversations, you may not need to pay at all.
