Bumble is a big swipe dating app from Bumble Inc., which also owns Badoo. Since August 2026 either person can send the first message after a match, and the free version covers matching, chat and video calls.
Bottom line: Bumble is a solid free first app for most people who want to date, especially if verified profiles matter to you.
Great for: A big, well-moderated swipe app
Not ideal for: People who want to date on a computer, or who chose Bumble because only women could send the first message.
How Bumble online dating works in 2026
Day to day, Bumble works like most swipe apps. In the People tab you swipe right on profiles you like, and a mutual like makes a Bumble match. The Discover tab adds four recommended people every morning at 9am, picked from shared interests and dating goals.
The big change is who starts the chat. Bumble launched in 2014 with a rule that only women could message first in man–woman matches, and it dropped that rule in August 2026 (TechCrunch, 2026). Now both people get one opening message after a match, and you have 72 hours to send yours. Once the other person replies, the chat opens fully. If nobody writes in time, the match expires, although everyone gets one free Extend a day. For guys on the Bumble dating app, that means no more waiting for her to write first.
Is there a Bumble dating site?
Not anymore. Bumble closed Bumble web, its browser version, and now asks everyone to use the iPhone or Android app. So if you’re looking for the Bumble dating website, you’ll be sent to the app instead. If you’d rather date on a computer, Match and eHarmony still have full websites.
What you can do for free
Without paying, you can:
- swipe in People, up to a daily like limit that resets 24 hours after you reach it;
- match, send your opening message and chat;
- make voice and video calls with matches inside the app;
- filter by age range, distance, languages, verification and similar interests (plus ethnicity in the US and Canada);
- extend one match a day by another 72 hours.

Who uses Bumble
The Bumble app averaged about 2.19 million paying users at the end of 2025 (Bumble Inc., 2026), and 8% of US adults say they’ve used it (Pew Research Center, 2023). You have to be 18 or older to join, and you can set the age range of the people you see in the free filters. Members also pick up to two dating intentions, so you’ll find everyone from people who want marriage to people who want something casual. On the stores, it averages 4.3 stars from 1.8 million App Store ratings and 3.8 from 1.62 million Google Play reviews, as of October 3, 2026.
Is Bumble good for serious relationships?
It can be, if you use the intentions. Options include a long-term relationship, a life partner and marriage, as well as fun, casual dates and intimacy without commitment, and they show on each profile. Bumble also says its new opening-message rules are meant to cut low-effort openers like “hey”. For built-in compatibility matching, eHarmony is more structured.
Is Bumble safe?
Bumble stacks several safety checks. Photo verification is required in the US and an ID badge is optional. AI tools backed by human moderators flag fake and scam accounts and blur explicit photos, and a Review before you send prompt asks people to rethink harmful messages. What happened to Bumble BFF and Bizz?
Bumble Bizz, the networking mode, is no longer available. If you’re after Bumble friends rather than dates, the US, Canada and Mexico now have a separate BFF app, and BFF Mode inside Bumble is closing there. Elsewhere, BFF Mode and the Bumble For Friends app still work.

- Verify early. It’s required in the US anyway, and an ID badge adds trust.
- Write a real opener. You get one message before the chat opens, and Bumble nudges you if you just type “hi”. Ask about something specific in their profile.
- Use your free Extend on the match you care about most when the 72 hours are nearly up.

Can women still message first on Bumble?
Yes, and so can men. Since August 2026, Bumble lets either person send the first message after a match, ending the women-first rule it launched with in 2014. Each person gets one opening message, and if nobody writes within 72 hours, the match expires.
Can I use Bumble on a computer?
No. Bumble closed its web version, so you now need the iPhone or Android app. If you used Bumble web, sign in to the app with the same account and your matches and chats will be there. Voice and video calls, Travel mode and Incognito mode are all in the app.
What is the age range on Bumble?
You must be 18 or older to use Bumble. In the People tab you can set the age range of the people you see in the free basic filters, along with distance, languages, verification and similar interests. Bumble may ask for photo verification if it suspects someone is under 18.
Does Bumble show when someone is online?
No. Bumble doesn’t show when members are online or when they last used the app, whether or not Incognito mode is on. The only signals are whether someone has matched with you and whether they’ve replied within the 72-hour window, so a quiet match isn’t necessarily ignoring you.
