How the Tinder dating app works

Most Tinder reviews start with the swipe, and it’s still the whole idea. You see one profile at a time, swipe right to like or left to pass, and if you both like each other, it’s a match and you can chat. Tinder started on a college campus in 2012 and belongs to Match Group. You must be 18 or over, and it runs in more than 190 countries, in the app and on the Tinder dating site at tinder.com (Tinder).

Your profile holds photos, a bio, interests, height, languages, job, school and your Relationship Goals. In Discovery settings you choose age range, distance and who you want to see, and you can decide whether those limits are firm. If they aren’t, Tinder may show people slightly outside them when you run out of profiles nearby.

Tinder features worth knowing

• Photo Verification. A short video selfie is compared with your profile photos and earns a blue check. Tinder says the check is a signal, not a guarantee.
• Explore. Tiles for shared interests such as food or music, where you swipe on people who picked the same thing.
• Passport. Change your city and swipe there. It’s part of paid plans and also sold on its own.
• Double Date. Pair up with a friend and match with other pairs. It’s free, and in testing in some markets.

Some markets also have Events, Group Hangouts, a daily Most Compatible suggestion and Your Type, which describes the kind of person you tend to like.

Is Tinder good for serious relationships?

It can be, but it isn’t built around them. Tinder has a Relationship Goals field, so you can say you want something long-term and look for people who say the same. Who uses Tinder

Mostly younger adults. In Pew Research’s 2022 survey of US adults, 79% of online daters under 30 had used Tinder, against 44% of those aged 30 to 49, 17% of those aged 50 to 64 and 1% of those 65 and over (Pew Research Center). Tinder is open to all orientations. You can show your sexual orientation on your profile and choose who you see, which makes it a common choice for gay daters too. It isn’t a friend-finding app, though. There’s no friends-only mode in its help pages, so anyone using Tinder for friends should say so clearly in the bio.

Is Tinder safe and worth it?

Tinder is a real service with a huge user base: 4.2 out of 5 from about 1.76 million ratings in the US App Store and 3.9 from about 9.3 million reviews on Google Play (checked November 1, 2026). Fill in your Relationship Goals and get Photo Verified before you start swiping. Then write a first message that picks up on something in the other person’s profile. A short question gets more replies than “hey”.
