What the HER dating app is
This HER review covers the best-known app for lesbian, bi and queer women. Robyn Exton founded it as Dattch more than a decade ago, and Match Group bought it in May 2025 (Bloomberg). HER says it has more than 14 million members worldwide. It’s an app for iPhone and Android only: there’s no HER dating site or web version (HER). You must be 18 or over.
Is HER only for lesbians?
No. HER says it’s for anyone in the LGBTQIA+ community, including queer women, trans women, trans men, non-binary people and gender non-conforming people, whether they want friendship or romance (HER). You can show your pronouns, gender identity and sexual identity on your profile. Straight men aren’t who it’s built for.
How HER works
In the Meet section you swipe through profiles chosen by your filters. Swipe right or tap the heart to like someone, and if they like you back, you match. A few things set it apart:
- You can message without a match. Besides matches, you can write directly from a profile, or to someone who’s engaged with your post.
- Matches expire. A match with no message from either person disappears after three days, and it can’t be restored. Chats quiet for 14 days move to an archive (HER).
- Communities and the Feed. You can join as many topic-based Communities as you like, post, and meet people that way. This is often the best route where few people live nearby.
- Profile details. Pride Pins, comments on likes (iPhone) and Places, up to three spots you’d like to go on a date, give people something to reply to.
What’s free on HER
HER says it’s free and will stay free. You can like, match and message without paying, and post in Communities. Free members get a daily limit on swipes and on likes with comments, see ads, and can filter only by age and distance. Other filters, such as gender identity, sexual identity and relationship status, need HER Premium. That’s a real limit on an app this diverse.
Who you’ll meet
Mostly people in their twenties and thirties, and the app works best in big cities, though HER doesn’t publish an age breakdown. It’s available in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and many other countries. Is HER legit and safe?
Yes. The app has 4.4 out of 5 from about 66,000 ratings in the US App Store and 4.3 from about 75,000 reviews on Google Play (checked November 1, 2026). HER’s Trust & Safety team verifies profiles, and you can block and report anyone. Some regions also use automated age and face photo checks.
