Our verdict
Dil Mil is a swipe dating app for South Asian singles, launched in 2014 and owned by Dating.com Group since 2019. Swiping, matching and messaging are free; VIP and VIP Elite add unlimited likes, a list of who liked you and community filters.
Bottom line: The best-known desi dating app and free to use for matching and chat; pair it with Hinge for more reach.
Great for: South Asian singles
Not ideal for: People who don’t want culture-based matching, or who live far from a sizable South Asian community.
What Dil Mil is
This Dil Mil dating app review starts with the basics: Dil Mil is a swipe app for South Asian singles, and you can match and chat without paying. KJ Dhaliwal launched it in 2014 for the diaspora in North America. Dating.com Group bought it in 2019 in a deal valued at up to $50 million (TechCrunch), so it isn’t part of Match Group.
Is Dil Mil dead? No. Both the iPhone and Android apps were updated in the past two months, and the US App Store version has a 4.0 rating from more than 21,000 ratings (checked October 16, 2026).
How Dil Mil works
You sign in with your phone number, build a profile and swipe. A mutual like is a match, and then you can message, or move to audio or video chat inside the app before sharing your number. Free members get a daily allowance of likes. Profiles carry the details that matter here: community, such as Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu or Bengali; faith, such as Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian or Jain; and background, from Indian and Pakistani to Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi and Nepali.
The catch is filtering. Dil Mil’s App Store listing puts the community, career and education filters under VIP. Free members can see those details on profiles, but they can’t narrow their deck by them, and on an app built around background that’s the main reason people pay.
Who you’ll meet
Dil Mil says it has 4 million users across the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, India and other countries. That’s the company’s own figure, and members are spread thinly outside cities with large South Asian communities. The mix of goals is wide: Dil Mil describes itself as an app for dating, long-term relationships or a future shaadi. Say which you want in your profile, or you’ll spend time on people who want something else.
Is Dil Mil legit and safe?
It’s a real, long-running app with a phone-number sign-in and profile verification, which makes duplicate and fake profiles harder to create. Fake profiles still appear on every dating app. Use the in-app video chat before you meet anyone, and never send money to a match.
Dil Mil vs Hinge
Hinge has far more people and a free ethnicity preference, but you won’t find Dil Mil’s detail on community and faith. Many desi singles use both. Our Dil Mil vs Hinge comparison covers when each one works better, and our South Asian dating apps ranking compares the wider field.
Our tip
Fill in every background field before you start swiping. Other members’ filters can only find you if they’re complete, and that matters most to the people who paid for VIP precisely to search by them.
