Our verdict

Grindr is the best-known app for gay, bi, trans and queer people and shows you who is nearby right now.

Bottom line: Grindr is unbeatable for reach. If you want a relationship, pair it with Hinge or Taimi.

Great for: Gay and bi men meeting people nearby

Not ideal for: People who want detailed profiles and slow, relationship-focused dating.

How the Grindr dating app works

This Grindr review starts with what it’s built on: location. Grindr is a social networking app for the LGBTQ+ community, and when you open it you see the Grid, a wall of the people closest to you (Grindr). You don’t have to match before you talk. You can open a profile and message anyone, or send a Tap, a one-touch ice-breaker. You must be 18 or over, and Grindr may ask for an age check with a video selfie, depending on where you live.

You can narrow the Grid with filters, available to everyone, for things such as age, photos, tribes, relationship status and what someone is looking for. My Tags let you describe your interests. Fresh shows new profiles, and Explore lets you look at another city. Free members can chat with one person found through Explore a day. Right Now is a one-hour status showing nearby people that you’re free to meet up.

Is there a Grindr dating site?

Sort of. Grindr Web lets you use the service in a browser, but it’s only for XTRA and Unlimited subscribers. New accounts have to be created in the app (Grindr).

Who Grindr is for

Grindr describes itself as serving gay, bi, trans and queer people, and people who are curious. Most users are men. So what about Grindr for straight people? It isn’t built for them, and a straight person will find few people looking for the same thing. Tinder or Hinge make more sense. Queer women and non-binary people will usually do better on HER or Taimi.

Is Grindr good for relationships?

It can be, but it isn’t built for them. Many people use it for quick meetups, and others to chat, make friends or find dates, especially when they’re traveling. Profiles can be short, and there’s no compatibility matching. If you want something long-term, you can say so in your profile and use the Looking For filter, or pair Grindr with an app built for relationships. Our gay dating sites ranking compares the options.

Is Grindr safe?

It takes more care than most apps, because it can show how close you are to someone. Turn off Show Distance if you’d prefer not to share that, though the Grid still sorts by distance. Every profile field is optional, so share only what you’re comfortable with. Expiring photos, the option to delete chats, and blocking and reporting all help too.

Grindr publishes safety guides for low-risk and high-risk areas, and it warns that being on the app can carry real danger in countries that criminalize same-sex relationships. Be careful when traveling, and don’t let anyone rush you into meeting in private. Our guide to verifying someone online will help before a first meeting.

Is Grindr worth it?

It’s the biggest app of its kind, rated 4.4 out of 5 from about 389,000 ratings in the US App Store and 4.2 from about 1.7 million reviews on Google Play (checked November 1, 2026). The free version shows ads and limits how many profiles you see, but you can still chat. That’s enough to judge it where you live. Note that Grindr’s standard purchases are final and non-refundable.

Grindr vs SCRUFF, Taimi and Tinder

SCRUFF is a smaller alternative for gay and bi men; see SCRUFF vs Grindr. Taimi has a broader LGBTQ+ community; see Grindr vs Taimi. Tinder is a mainstream swipe app where you match first; see Grindr vs Tinder.

Our tip

Fill in your profile and add a clear photo, even though nothing forces you to. A good first message mentions something from the other person’s profile. Before you meet anyone new, video chat first, meet in public and tell a friend where you’re going.
